Social commitment and Facebook

In the framework of the project, we analyzed the role of online communication tools in stimulating public discussion and social commitment and shaping them.

The aim of the study conducted using the method of sociological intervention and online questionnaires (CAWI) was to describe and understand the mechanisms of participant involvement in the protest against the signature of ACTA (Anti- Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) by the Polish government.

We explored different forms of social commitment (particularly activism) among young people. Understanding their motivations and ways of participating in the protests has allowed us to gain knowledge about the models of social engagement oriented towards specific purpose, limited in time and organizing itself with the help of online communication tools. This model was hence similar to a typical “project” task.

Describing and understanding the new forms of activism based on social networking tools and new media can facilitate the planning of activities to increase community involvement of young people, stimulate public discussion on important issues, and contribute to the development of civil society.
